OUR STAGE – 4th European Festival of Bürgerbühne will not only host performances of the most noteworthy pieces of participative theatre currently on stage, but also provide structure to the debate on their artistic quality and societal relevance. The emergence of numerous Bürgerbühne (“citizen’s stages�) and similar models in Germany over the last few years has been reflected in developments in the field of participative theatre throughout Europe. It is with this in mind that OUR STAGE aims to consolidate the European contacts forged at the previous festivals of Bürgerbühne in Dresden (2014), Mannheim (2015) and Freiburg (2017), foster an intensive discussion of forms, content and experience and, in turn, establish a network that promotes the development of participative theatre as a whole.´ The European Theatre Convention (ETC) – a network of 40 European theatres from over 20 European nations – was therefore a natural choice as the festival’s main partner. The festival will also be flanked by cooperation with a number of European universities. The eleven festival productions will be selected by Miriam Tscholl, the head of the Bürgerbühne at Staatsschauspiel Dresden, with the support of a European artistic committee. Over 30 artists, theatre directors and academics from a broad range of disciplines and at least nine different European countries will use workshops, presentations and discussions to investigate the creative, social and political questions that accompany the issue of participation and theatre.
